SEVERE LIGHTNING STORM.
METER IN SCHOOL SMASHED.
FIFTY TELEPHONES DISABLED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WAXGAXUI, this day. Patea was visited by a severe thunder storm on Tuesday. The lightning was particularly vivid, and the size of the hailstones startled many residents. It was very fortunate that the storm passed before the children left for school, for an electric meter in the assembly hall at the local school was struck by lightning and demolished, the fragments being hurled nearly 100 feet down the hall. The conduit was twisted and the plug in one room was struck. It was remarkable that the copper and the porcelain were burnt in one mass. If the children had been at school they would undoubtedly have had a very terrifying experience.
The borough electrical engineer, who was in charge of a Diesel plant at the time of the storm, Bays he heard a violent report at the back of the switchboard, but fonnd no damage had been done. The local Telegraph Department was seriously affected, no fewer than 50 telephones being put out of commission.
