STREET WIDENING.
SYMONDS STREET PROPOSAL. TO RELIEVE TRAFFIC CONGESTION. Improvements are to be made in Symonds Street in the vicinity of Grafton bridge, by the City Council on the recommendation of the Town Planning Committee. The roadway on the east side of Symonds Street, north of Grafton bridge, and on the west side south of Karangahape Road is to be widened. The kerbs are to be set back to provide for a footpath Bft. wide. The estimated cost is £770, and work will be proceeded with as soon as funds are available.
The City Engineer (Mr. W. E. Bush) reported to last night's meeting of the City Council that the carrying out of this work would be a partial solution to the traffic congestion at Grafton bridge intersection.
Other work was deferred, including the widening of Liverpool Street and City Road. In regard to a proposal to widen Durham Street by 6ft, the engineer was empowered to negotiate with property owners and offer them £100 a foot.
