WEEK-END PRICES IN SHOPS.
EGGS AGAIN EASIER.
SHORT SUPPLIES OF FISH
FIRST LOQUATS ARRIVE.
Naturally with the boisterous weather that has prevailed during the past week supplies of fish have been very short, but still that did not result in any upward move in prices. Lobsters came to hand in fair quantites and found ready sale.
A drop of one penny per dozen took place yesterday in the retail price of eggs. Fresh hen eggs are selling at 1/3 to 1/4 per dozen and duck eggs at 1/2 to 1/3 per dozen. With the present price of fowl wheat this simply means that the prices received by poultrykeepers at the present time are not remunerative. The cost of fowl wheat is still the. same, owing to the duty oil imported grain. A small shipment of eggs has been exported, but- that has not relieved the position on this market as large supplies are coming forward from the country storekeepers. No doubt advantage will be taken of the present low price of eggs to put down supplies for next winter. Butter, cheese, hams, bacon and all kinds of meat show no alteration in price this week. Fruit is still in heavy supply, with the result that prices are reasonable. This applies in particular to apples. Pears are not quite so plentiful now. Oranges and mandarins are in good supply, and the first of the loquats came to hand this week, the price asked being fourpence per pound. Quotations to-day are:— Butter and Cheese.
