TEACHERS' SALARIES.
WOMEN SEEK EQUALITY.
SUPPORT BY SIB J. G. WARD.
EDUCATION MINISTER INDEFINITE
(By Telegraph.--Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Whether it would be possible to pay women teachers at the same rate as men, was a question asked the Minister of Education by the Leader of the United party (Right Hon. Sir Joseph Ward) in the House of Representatives to-day. He described it as a question of urgency "to those concerned." Sir Joseph said he had received a number of communications from women teachers, in different parts of the country, urging that they receive equal remuneration with men. The Minister of Lands: All members of the House have received them! Chorus of Voices: Yes, we all got them!
Sir Joseph Ward: All the more reason iir bringing the matter up. Mr. J. A. Lee (Auckland East): Hear, iiear.
The United" party leader declared that lie would be glad to see women paid on equal terms with men, when they rendered equal services. "This is an old question, which has been before many previous Ministers," replied the, Hon. I\. A. Wriplit. "Indeed, f believe it was before the Government in the (lavs when the honourable gentleman. who asked the question, was Prime Minister. It is a very difficult problem. At the present time, teachers' >alaries generally are being investigated. An effort is bein? made to arrive at a system under which they may be stabilised, so that there will not be so much changing about among teachers. All this changing is, I believe, causing a great deal of injury to young people. "When this question of stabilisation has been decided, it will be possible to give a more definite answer to the queston which has been raised by the right honourable gentleman."
