OPENING ROUND RESULTS.

LEADING PLAYERS LEFT IN,

NO SURPRISES TO-DAY

The real business of the New Zealand ladies' golf championship meeting commenced this morning when the first round of the championship was decided. The weather conditions were good. The wind was light from the sou'-west, and the sky was overcast, but the light was good. Rain threatened, but there was only a light drizzle, which did not inconvenience anyone, nor affect the play. The playing conditions were better than on the previous day. Considering the amount of rain which has fallen during the month the course is in remarkably good condition.

The holder of the title, Mrs. H. Collinson, is not present, but the runner-up, Miss E- Culling, is taking part in the tournament. Among other noted players taking part are Mrs Guy Williams, whose eards this season, however, were not good enough to secure her a place in the North Island team, although she has won the New Zealand championship on several occasions and the Australian championship once. There arc also several provincial tournament winners taking part, and these include Miss M. Pavton and Miss 0. Kay.

There were no surprises during the play in tiie first round. Most of the leading players are still in. -Mrs Deighton and Miss Briefed, who were expected to do well. \vt*re eliminated. Details of Play.

The match between Miss Muriel Payton and Miss Gambrill was keenly contested. Miss Pay ton won the iirst hole, 4—o, but the next went to her opponent in s—ti.5 —ti. Miss Payton won the third, 4—5, and Miss Gambrill the next three, 4—5, 6—7 and 4—3 respectively. The next two were halved in four, aiul Miss Payton won the ninth, o—7.0 —7. Miss Gambrill was one up at the turn for home.

Coming in Miss Pavton's game improved, and she won the lOtli, lltli and 12tli holes in 3—3. 4—5 and o—7 respectively. Miss Gambi ill won the 13th, 4—5. the 14th went to her opponent, 4—5, and Miss Gambrill won the 15tli, 4 —5. The next was halved in fives, and Miss Payton winning the next, 4 —■">, won tiie game, two up and one to play.

Much interest was taken in the match between Miss D. Chrystall and Miss K. G. Bristed. Miss Chrystall won the first hole, 4 —5, and the next three were halved in fives. Miss Bristed won the the fifth. Miss Chrystall won the sixth, o —6, the next was halved in fours, and Miss Bristed brought the game all square by winning the Sth in 4 —5. Miss Chrystall won the 9tli, s—o, and turned for home one up.

The tenth was won by Miss Chrystall, the next was halved in four, and Miss Bristed reduced the margin by winning the next. The next two holes were halved in fours, and Miss Bristed again brought the game all square by winning the 15th, 4—5. The next two holes were halved in fives and fours respectively, and Miss Chrystall won the ISth, (3—-7, and the game, one up.

•A good game resulted from the meeting of Mrs. Humphrey and Mrs. Dcighton. Even play resulted in the former being two up at the turn. 1 his advantage was held coming home, although the game was carried to the 18th green!

The match between Miss D. Horton and ills. Wool la ni s was a good contest. At one time Mi- S Horton was two up. but Mis. Woollams brought the game all square at the ISth.
