REPUBLICANISM.

Jn Favour With Labour In

South Africa.

EXTREMISTS ASTONISHED. (Australian Press Assn.— United Service.) (Received 11 a.m.) CAPETOWN, September 26. Despite General Hertzog's declaration that the advocacy of Republicanism ■would mean the disruption of the Nationalists, two clergymen of the Dutch Church aro leading the extremists. The country was astonished to-day v lien a member of Parliament, Mr. Allen,'a prominent Labourite, pronounced himself in favour of Republicanism, ii d<l! \g that the country would probably adjust the pursuit of a secession objective to the exigencies of time, and urged the Labourites frankly to declare that Republicanism was not abandoned. The probable result will be that the working class of the Dutch will join the Labour extremists.

On September 18 a message was received ■which stated that General Hertzog had issued a warning to the clergy against the preaching of republicanism from the pulpit. This, he said, was quite unnecessary, as South Africa already had national freedom, and he was satisfied that the majority of the people did not want a Repubhp. He also condemned propaganda vliich is being spread in the Orange Free State- to secure a declaration of definite republicanism by the National party. Such • declaration, he said, would lead to the immediate destruction of the party.
