COLEMAN BEQUEST.

PJCTORES FOR AUCKLAND.

SEVEK Ollr PAINTINGS.

VARIETY OF SUBJECTS

Seven oil paintings, two water colours and one etching are included in the collection for the -Auckland Art Gallery under the will of the late Mr. J. H. Cbleman, of Hawke's Bay, whose death was announced yesterday.

The- pictures were selected some time ago by Mr. J. Barr when on a, visit to Hawke's Bay, whose notes on the collection are as follows:..

"Memories," by J. W. Godward. A large picture representing % Grecian woman standing in a contemplative mood before a marble wall. The drawing and painting are both good, the draping in classical costume of the figure, and the marble wall, being nicely done. "

"Roman Interior," by Luiga Barrain. Apparently - the work of an Italian artist. Its* Litereat is largely antiquarian, the kouse being of the classic period.

"Burnham Beeches," by W. Luker. A large canvas showing a part of the Buckinghamshire Forest with green trees and moss-covered ground.

"Russian Scene," by Josef Simorrovitz Monachaiof. A small picture of a Kussian scene in winter which gives the impression of faithfully representing the character of that country.

"The Tiger," by R. Friese. A very fin« animal study of a tiger which has just brought down its quarry.

"Puppies," by W. H. Todd. A small and charming picture of dogs, painted by a well-known animal painter who exhibited regularly at the ltoyal Academy, London.

"Wallingford on the Thames," by A. de Breanski. A pleasing landscape.

Included in the water colours are "The OM and the New Broadhenburv," by John White, and "Auckland in 1873," by J. C. Hbyte.

The etching is by tTul<?3 Jacquet, entitled "1807,"' a Frencli engraving. It is signed by both painter and etcher.
