SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A progressive MO tournament was given by the Rocky Xook croquet ladiea on Tuesday. Mrs. Wiles and Mrs. Turner dispensed afternoon tea. The winners were: Mrs. Maude 1, Mrs. S. Cole 2. The consolation prize went to Mrs. By lance. Other players were: Mrs. F.inpen, Mrs. Whittaker, Mrs. Aitfhcrton, Mrs. J. , McAneny. Mrs. Adeane, Mrs. Morley, Mrs. 'Watson, Mrs. Atighton.

Tlic Gardening Circle of the Lyceum Club held a very interesting gathering in the Domain hothouses this week, when they were shown by Mr. Turner how to mix soil and sow seeds, so that the young plants would have the best conditions in which to thrive. The talk was very practical, and the members, twenty in number, under their convenor, Mrs. Tattcrsfield, thoroughly enjoyed the day's outing.

Miss E. Blandford, of Kingeland Post Office, on her retiring from the service,' was made the recipient of a public presentation by the business people of KingiOand yesterday' at noon. Mr. J. \V. Bissett. .1.P., nrade the presentation, which consisted of a handsome Kaiapoi rug with monogram and a boudoir basket casket of eau de cologne. The postmaster, Mr. Mcfsaac, and Mr. A. W. Page, also supported the eulogy of public service and appreciation accorded Miss Blandford.

The St. Paul's branch of the Girl's Friendly Society gave a very enjoyable dramatic entertainment in St. Paul's Hall, Symonds Street, on Tuesday e\-en-ing. In spite of very inclement weather there was a splendid attendance, and the Brett .Memorial Children's Home fund should benefit to some extent from the proceeds. The St. Paul** girls gave a costume play, "The Fool's Errand." and girls from Holy Sepulchre's appeared in a diverting comedy, "Mechanical Jane," which was very well done. The vicar of St. Paul's, the Rev. Cecil Watson, took the opportunity of making a presentation to v Mrs. Murrnne. a pariah worker, who is held in great esteem, and who is leaving for England this week. The presentation took the form of a handsome leather handbag. Mrs. Jlnrrane feelingly acknowledged the gift. Misa Pauline Wateon and Miss Sunday Stratford handed to Candn Hasclden. Hospital Chaplain, a number of scrapbook* for the sick children; these had been prepared by the children of St. Paul's G.F.S. Enjoyable items were contributed by Mr. and Mre. Betts, Miss Thomas, Miss Eunice Riley and Miss June Leaning. • • • •

Although "The Round Ttable." tlie play which the Little Theatre Society •re presenting at the present time, does not lend itself to extravagant dressing, the frocking ie charming. Mrs. Lowry MaoGregor, who took the part of Daisy Dremiani, made her first entrance in a amart jumper suit in a dull red shade, worn under a black tailored coat. A ■mall tight-fitting black felt hat went with this, completing the ensemble. !She chose for the last act. a patterned '•repe de chine frock in a deep shade of yellow. Almond green trimmings gave tbe necessary touch that harmonised with a green straw hat with drooping %rim, trimmed efc one side with a cluster of buttercepe. . The scene in the railway station gave the whole cast the opportunity of attractive dressing. Mrs. Margot Finlayeon wore a crepe de cf hie jumper suit of the palest pink with large natural straw hat, lined with the same shade of pink, and trimmed with a scarf that was slashed around the crown find hung over the side. Mrs. Susan Moncrieff JfrCallnni wore peacock blue satin with black laoe wrap and large Mack hat with ostrich feather trimming. Mrs. Ethel Sebmitt was in gold lace, worn under a bronze, satin coat and large lace hat with feather trimming. Miss Nancy Bedstone wore a frock of deep cream lace with picture hat and white fox furs, and Miss Ethel Rae wan in peacock blue and black, with small black hat.

Another enjoyable social was held by the members of the Auckland Toy Dog Ctuh in the Click Clack Cabaret last evening.
