NORTH r. SGCTH" MATCH.
The links at Middlemore were in good order when the New Zealand ladies' golf championship meeting was commenced this rmorning. Notwithstanding the recent heavy rain, the.£reens were excellent and under the influence or a bright sun and dryinjr wind the course was improving rapidly. v ,
The competitors taking part in the meeting total 125, representing aver 20 clubs in various parts of the Dominion. For the championship there are 49 entries. The present champion, Mrs. H. Collinson, of Palmerston North, has been prevented by sickness from defending her title.
The first event, tlie North v. South Island match, was commenced - this morning. There are eight pleyers in each team. G. Williams, 3lrs. Weston and Gaisford, played off yesterday for the last place in the Xorth Island team, Mies Gaisford returning the best bogey score. For the best two places in the South Island team, Mrs. Hannan, Mrs. Slee and Miss Lucas played oft*. Mrs. Hannan and Mrs. Slee returned the best cards.
The North and South Island matcL resulted in a win for the South Islar. I team by six games to two.
NORTH V. SOUTH. DETAILS OF PLAY. At 10 o'clock Miss £. Culling and Miss O. Kay drove off from the' first tee. The sun was shining brightly, but there was a strong westerly wind blowing, which affected the play at most of the holes. Keen interest was taken in this game, and «. gallery of over 100 followed the players round the course. From the outset both players drove well, but their putting was not as good. Mise Kay won the first hole 4—5, the second was halved in fives, and Miss Kay won the next.two Jiotee, and 5—6. The fifth was won by Miss Culling S-β, "and the next three were halved in fives, threes, and foura respectively. The ninth went to Miss .Culling; 5—7, -and the players turned for home with 'Miss Kay two*np\. and both players four 1 ower' the bogdy score of 40. '-> '. . ' .
Turning for home .Mils Culling-picked up one, 4 —7, but Miss Kay -won the remaining holes 4—o, —G, 3 —5, 4 —til and .^1 —1, aud won the inaioli at the lotli hole, 5 up and three to play. The next pair to finish were Mh>3 D. Clirystal find Miss M. I'aytou. -Tills was a' well contested ga«ie, and \\a«- not won until the ISth hole. The Hist hole was won by iJL-ss Payton. Str-G. the second halved in fives. Miss L'hrvhtaU took the third in 5—G, and the next t\yo were halved in five* and sixes respbctively. Coming in Miss Chryetall won tlutenth, the jiext two were halved in fives and sixes, and Miss Payton won the next two, 3—4 for each,* and the 13th 3 —t. and the game was all square, it was M|tinrc again at the 17th. and Mis* UiryaUill won the 18th, s—«, and the game 1 up.
