RELIEF OF UNEMPLOYMENT.
MR. SAVAGE . CONCERNED. QUESTION TO PRIME MINISTER. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Concern was expressed by Mr. M. J. Savage (Auckland West) at the increase in the number of unemployed in Auckland, when he asked the Prime Minister in the House of Representatives to-day if there was any "serious movement" to relieve the situation.
"There are 847 unemployed on the register, of i.'hom 708 are shown as fit for heavy work," said Mr. Savage. "Yesterday I received a deputation of fifty men and they were certainly on short rations."
The Prime Minister replied that he was informed the increase was due principally to the cessation of forestry operations, both Government and private. An arrangement was being made to transfer a number of men to certain other work. Instructions had been given to do this immediately.
