AMERICA'S PRESIDENCY.
COST OF THE CAMPAIGN. NO HOPE FOR LABOUR. It will be quite a while before the Presidency of the United States will be filled by a representative of the labour party is the opinion of Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P., who is at present in Canada ttt the Parliamentary Conference. According to figures which are published in New York, the case seems hopeless, as since 1860, with one exception, the candidate with the largest sum of money at his disposal has been elected. It was considered costly a few years ago, when T. H. Newberry, in a contest for the Senate, spent 105.000 dollars ( £39,000), . put that fados into insignificance before the presidential contest expenditure. The exemption mentioned was when Woodrow Wilson's campaign cost 1.f>84.590 dollars, and he defeated C. E. Hurrhe*. on whose belialf the sum of 2,441.565 dollars wae spent. In ISflfi William MeKi'iJev's eo)npaign cost 3.500.000 dollars (£720.170) and each s>de of the present content expects to spend at. least 4.000,000 dollars ( 000) this year. The broPfi-fWinw will cost, from W 000 dollars (£7200) to 40 000 dollars ( €80001 ver ni«rht for a nntio'i-win'e sorv'"o.
