FIRE CATASTROPHE.
CROWDED THEATRE IN FLAMES.
ONE OF EUROPE'S WORST DISASTERS.
Desperate Struggles in Blazing Inferno by
Panic-Stricken Mob.
PISTOLS AND KNIVES FREELY USED.
MANY PREFER DEATH BY SUICIDE
One of the worst disasters of its kind Europe has known, the fire that broke out in a largely attended Madrid theatre extended to a whole block of buildings. The sudden spread or the flames into the auditorium started a panic the like of which has seldom been seen, and in which desperate struggles of frenzied men and women took place. Many bodies have been discovered with bullet wounds and knife wounds, indicating that they fell victims of the mad rush for safety, or preferred instant death at their own hands before incineration in a raging furnace.
