CORNWALLIS WHARF.
UWFtTLFIULED PROMISES. COUNCIL SUPPLIES DEFICIENCY. The Auckland Harbour Board asked the Onehunga Borough Council last night to pay half of the amount promised ( £100) towards the new wharf at Cornwallis. The Mayor of Onehunga had written the treasurer of the Harbour Board, on August 15 last, that he was arranging to collect from those who had promised donations, the letter adding that in several con.versations there hue been evidently a suggestion that this was a matter of private donation. That doubtless l» the position as between the donors and the Borough Council, but as between the council and the Auckland Harbour Board the latter contends it is an official undertaking by the council. The Mayor (Mr. W. C. Coldicutt) stated that he had* promised to raise ,£IOO in Onehunga. and was backed up by the council at the time. His intention was to get the money by private subscriptions. Unfortuntaely one person who had promised £20 had not contributed 20 pence. He was very disappointed with the poor response to hi* appeal from the people who would greatly benefit by the use of the newwharf. They had let him down, and ho felt keenly. He had £19 15/ in hnnd towards the first £50. Mr. W. C. Hill said the Manukan Yacht Club would be responsible for £20 towards the wharf, and most, if not all the money was in sight, and the Mayor could have it at any time. With the remark from the Mayor that the sports bodies had not acted in a sporting spirit, the discussion closed, and the council agreed to make vv thm balance to £50.
