TALLOW, HEMP, WOOL, ETC.

The Department of Agriculture has rereceived the following cablegram, dated September 22, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand in London:— Tallow.—The spot market ia firm, and business is fair for shipment. Present quotations are:—Mutton: Fine, 44/ per cwt; fair to good, 42/ to 43/; dark to dull, 39/ to 39/6. Beef: Sweet and/or mixed, 43/6 to 45/; fair to good, 39/6 to 42/6; dark to dull, 38/ to 39/. Mixed: Fair to good, 40/ to 42/; dark to dull, 38/ to 39/; gut, etc., 37/ to 39/6. Hemp.—The Manila market is dull, and eaey owing to heavy receipts. "J" grade is quoted for October-December shipment at sellers, £34 10/. The sisal market is quiet but firm. No. 1 is quoted at £35 15/, and No. 2 at £34 5/ to £34 10/ buyers, September-November shipment. New Zealand: The demand is moderate in all positions, but sellers' ideas are too high for buyers. Quotations are nominal and unchanged. Stocks in London on August 31 were 86 tone, against 92 tons at the same time last year. Apples.—Fair trade for good quality Current prices are: Californian Newtons, 12/6 per ease; Gravenetein, 13/6; Jonathan, on/ }°«}' >/ ' Nova Scotian Gravensteins, 20/ to 28/ a barrel.
