BIG BILLIARDS.
McCONACHY PLAYS W. LINDRUM. AUSTRALIAN'S GOOD START. NEW ZEALANDER 1100 BEHIND. In the first two sessions of the exhibition billiards game of 18,000 up, played yesterday afternoon and last evening, Walter Idndrum, the Australian expert, established a substantial lead on Clark McConachy, the New Zealand crack. The game is being played at the St. James' Theatre building. Both players had just come off the Aorangi after the trip from Sydney and McConachy appeared unsettled. Lindrum, on the other hand, was on hie game from the start. At his fourth visit to the table in the afternoon session he scored 92 in quick time, and at hie next cue compiled a nice all-round break of 279, the spectators being particularly impressed with his top of the table play. Again the Australian gained complete control over the balls and rattled up 241, making light of positions, which, to the majority of the spectators, appeared very safe. MeConachy's best effort was a break of 50 and he was only a few over the hundred when the Australian ran to session points in just under the hour. The scores were: W. Lindrum, 750 (in play); breaks, 92, 279, 241; average, 50. C. McConachy, 107. In exhibition games of snooker Lindrum won by 2 games to 1. Lindrum continued to go ahead at the evening session, McConachy still being a long way below his best form. There was again a good attendance. In welcoming Lindrum, Mr. W. E. Hackett said that local billiards enthusiasts regarded it aft a great honour that the Au*tralian should play his first game of billiards outside his own country in Auckland, despite substantial offers to visit England. Carrying on his unfinished break, Lindrum got to 167 before missing a difficult shot. Three cues later he got going again and put together 224. McConachy registered a break of 55, but the Australian added efforts of 84 and 74 and soon ran to session points. The session scores were: W. Lindrum (in play), 1500; breaks, 167, 224, 100, 84, 74 and 57, unfinished. McConachy, 374. In exhibition games of snooker, each player scored a win. The billiards game will be continued this afternoon and evening.
