SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

On Wednesday evening a well attended dance was held in the Matiere Hall when the Matiere Football Club held their annual dance. Excellent music was supplied by the Bow Tie Pour and the extras were played by Mr. A. 3L Margan and D. Longley. The spot waltz was won by Mr. Box and Miss E. Olsen, while the Monte Carlo was won by Miss J. Khynd and Mr. F. Sowry.

The Mothers' Club held a very success* ful social in the Y.W.GA. social hall on Saturday night, when over two hundred guests were present. The hall was tastefully decorated and a very enjoyable programme was presented. It consisted of a pianoforte solo by Miss Daley, songs by Miss Elva Douglas and the Messrs. Frost, Burke and Walding. Recitations were rendered by Miss Jean Douglas and Mr. Trevor Binns. Dancing and games were also indulged in and a very dainty supper was served. The president, Mrs. Hankin, gave a delightful little speech and thanked the artiste and all those who had helped to make the gathering a success. Miss Daley proTided the music for the evening, and a very pleasant evening came to a dose with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne" and the National Anthem.

An enjoyable dance was held in the Kitchener Hall, Kitchener Street, by the Auckland City Tramways Club Rugby Football Sub-committee. Music was ren* dered by Edgar BendalPs Orchestra. To mark the forty-first anniversary of their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. T. White, of "The Kauris," Ponsonby, entertained members of their family at a»dinner party on Saturday evening at the Hotel Auckland. A happy coincidence was recalled by Mr. and Mrs. White in that on their wedding day they were entertained at the same hotel, which is still under the management of the same family.

On Tuesday night a very successful and also enjoyable five hundred tournament was held at the residence of Mrs. G. Kelly's, Matiere. The proceeds were in aid of the English Church. An enjoyable supper was served by the ladies of the committee and dispensed by many willing volunteers. The winners of the ladies' first prize was Mr. G. Etherington, while the winner of the gents' was Mr. Price. The consolation prizes were won by Mrs. Gibson and Mr. W. Kelly. The surprise packet was won by Mr. P. Petley, jun.

Mrs. H. W. Wilson held a bridge party at her home in Remuera yesterday, which was delightfully decorated with spring blooms. Miss Sybil Martin, the guest of honour, wore a ceil blue shaded into green frock, hat to tone. Mrs. Wilson received the guests in a sage-green figured georgette. Miss Eileen Myers (of London) had a charming gown of grey and mauve georgette, hat with diamante buckle. Among those present were:— Lady Jean Macintosh, Mrsaßowring, Mrs. Woodhead, Mrs. Lennard, Mrs. Ludbrook, Mrs. N. Bull, Mrs. Murdoch Smith, Miss M. Macf arlane, Miss G. A very enjoyable "book evening" was held by ,the Auckland branch of the Navy League last evening, when a large numbe/ of books and magazines were received. Similar evenings are held annually by /the league, and the books are distributed to lighthouse keepers and ships in port, while some are sent to the Islands. Mr. J. Alexander, president of the Auckland branch of the league, and Mrs. Alexander received the guests. Much amusement was caused as the titles of the books the guests represented were guessed. During the evening songs were sung by Mrs. H. V. Leadbeater, Mrs. Gaynor Jackson and Miss Phyllis Rentier, a recitation was given by Miss Ailsa Hacket and a sketch entitled "The Young Idea" was cleverly done by Mrs. Stratton and Miss Chalmers. Supper concluded a very pleasant evening.

The staff of the Auckland district telegraph engineer enjoyed a very pleasant evening last Thursday when a dance in aid of the staff cricket club was held at the Masonic Hall, Newton.
