WATCH AND CHAIN STOLEN.
MAN ARRESTED AT PAWNSHOP
REMANDED FOR SENTENCE
Although he pleaded not guilty when charged at the Police Court this morning with stealing a watch, chain and sovereign-case, valued at £45, the property of Frederick Fish, throughout the whole proceedings Edward Charles Sadler (43), a labourer, had not a word to say for himself.
Frederick Fish said that his watch and chain and a sovereign-case were left in his waistcoat, which he hung in the cloakroom at his business. When he went to put his waistcoat on he discovered his jewellery missing, and informed the police.
Detective Knight said that as the result of inquiries he had made he discovered that the missing articles had been pawned for £2 at a Hobson Street pawnshop. A watch was set at the shop, and yesterday, when Sadler returned to the shop, he was arrested. Sadler explained that a man whose name he did not know gave him the watch and chain in the street and asked him to raise something on it.
"That, of course," is an old story," said Chief Detective Hammond, who- added that Sadler had not been in trouble previously. He was at present out of work. Mr. Hunt remanded Sadler for one week, pending a report from the Probation Officer.
