AUCKLAND RAILWAYMEN.

FOREMAN RETIRES.

OFFICER TRANSFERRED.

HIGH TRIBUTES PAID TO BOTH.

Having completed 40 years’ service with the New Zealand Railways, Mr. W. Maloney has retired from the position of locomotive foreman at Auckland. To mark the occasion, his colleagues tendered him a smoke concert on Saturday evening, when the Railway Social Hall was filled to overflowing. Mr. R. Carroll, ex-president ofc- the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, presided. Amongst the guests vrere. Mr. J. F. Mackley, locomotive engineer for the North Island railways; Mr. J. G. Rickerbv, district traffic manager; Mr. J. Binstead, assistant locomotive engineer; Mr. R. Walker, locomotive foreman Frankton Junction; Mr. J. Gripps, assistant locomotive foreman, Auckland district; Air. R. Wellings, ex-locomotive foreman, N.Z.R.; Mr. S. Kennedy, exassistant locomotive foreman Auckland district; and Air. W. Hartley, stationmaster elect, Oamaru. Apologies for absence were received from Air. H. H. Stirling, general manager, and Mr. E. Casey, divisional superintendent for the North Island railways. On behalf of the staff, Air. Alackley presented Air. Maloney with two divan chairs. He mentioned the high esteem in which Mr. Alaloney was held by all with whom he had come in contact. It had been pleasing to hear the remarks of Mr. Rickerby and Mr. Carroll regarding co-operation, which was becoming more and more in evidence amongst all branches of the service. This was as it should be. On account of his extensive knowledge of the district, Air. Alaloney had been temporarily appointed foreman at Dunedin during the exhibition period, and had acquitted himself most capably under strenuous circumstances. Air. Alaloney had also been largely responsible for the businesslike way in which traffic conditions had been reestablished after the Ongarue accident. Air. Maloney in reply expressed his regret at leaving his colleagues and thanked them for the splendid farewell given him.

OAMARU’S NEW S.M.

MR. W. HARTLEY FAREWELLED.

There was a large gathering of railway men in the social hall this afternoon, when Air. W. Hartley, assistant stationmaster at Auckland, who has been promoted to be stationmaster at Oamaru, was farewelled. Air. J. C. Duncan, S.AI. at Auckland, presided, and in addition to members of both divisions, several head office officials were present.

In making several presentations to Mr. Hartley, Air. Duncan paid a high tribute to his sterling qualities. Reference was also made to the able manner

in which Mr. Hartley had controlled the booking office during the period he had been in charge of that and other departments. Although they were sorry to have to lose the services of such an efficient officer from the Auckland station, still they were glad he had gained such well-earned promotion. Mr. Hartley was received with cheers when he rose to reply. He thanked the staff who had been under him for the manner in which they’ had carried out their duties and for assistance given him at all times.
