Mr. H. S. Anderson's sawmill at Dargaville destroyed by fire yesterday. Bristol fighter planes left Westmere, Wanganui, at 11.5 a.m. to-day for Blenheim.
Heavy rain in Te Kuiti last night caused rivers to rise quickly, and some flooding is reported. A large numlier of ecclesiastical delegates to the Eucharistic Congress in Sydney returned to Auckland to-day. American expedition which explored New Guinea with aid of aeroplane arrived by Aorangi from Sydney to-day. Heavy thunder storm passed over the city early this morning, the rainfall for 24 hours ended 9 a.m. being nearly one inch.
The body which was recovered from the harbour on Saturday has been identified as that of Malcolm Mackenzie, a seaman from the steamer Pakeha. Commander-in-Chief of the Air Defences of Great Britain (Sir John Salmond) arrived by Aorangi on a month’s advisory tour of New Zealand.
Four English public school boys at present in Auckland under the Hon. L. C. Amery’s scheme, and they leave bv the Aorangi for Canada to-morrow. A portion of the cargo of the steamer Port Hunter, which arrived at Auckland yesterday from New York, consists of stores for the Byrd expedition to the South Pole.
Mr. W. Maloney, locomotive foreman, who has completed 40 years’ service in the New Zealand Railways, was farewelled by a large gathering of railway men on Saturday evening. Limited express delayed nearly two hours on the journey fratal Wellington on account of trouble with a hot box in a de Luxe sleeper north of Palmerston. The express did not reach Auckland until 11.20 a.m.
Mr. W. Hartley, assistant stationmaster at Auckland, has been promoted stationmaster at Oamaru. and this afternoon he received several presentations from members of the railways staff in Auckland.
The crew of the Southern Cross and members of the New Zealand Permanent Air Force took their departure in the three Bristol Fighters early yesterday afternoon, and after a fast flight arrived at Hawera, later proceeding to Wanganui. The Hon. Sir Maui Pomarc, while travelling on the Main Trunk express from Wellington last night, was taken suddenly ill north of Taihape, and was removed from the train at Frankton Junction to be taken to the Hamilton HospitaL Beautiful furs and fur coats can be bought for exactly half their original price at the Hudson Company’s great fur sale, next Regent Theatre.—(Ad.)
