FROM DOLE TO ROLL.

LOOM SWEEPER’S £20,000. LONDON, September 21. What the prize of £20,000 given by the “Sunday Despatch” for forecasting correctly 24 football results means to Tom Hartley may be judged from the fact that he is an unemployed loom sweeper, and has been frequently “on the dole” this year.

Since both were 11 years of age, Hartley and his wife, except when he was on war service, have worked side by side at the loom, at which his wife remained while Hartley came to London to receive the cheque. The biggest sum he had previously possessed was his £l7 war gratuity.
