FALLOW DEER HERDS.
MATAMATA FAVOURS OLD SEASON. (From Our Own Correspondent.) , MATAMATA, Saturday. Consideration of the best policy to follow with regard to seasons for fallowdeer shooting, as applied to district herds, was given at the annual meeting of the Matamata Acclimatisation Societyon Friday. It arose through a letter from the Auckland body asking for a report on the Maungakawa, Cambridge, and Kaipara herds, and stating that Te Arolia sportsmen wished the first-mentioned herd to be thrown open from January 1 to December 31 for a fee of £l.
The secretary suggested a 2J months’ season. He said there were still some good heads on Maungakawa, but a long season would be detrimental.
The president said it would never do to adopt the Te Aroha suggestion. If they allowed “open slather” it would mean that the herds in the district would be cut out altogether. It was decided to advocate a season Tom March 15 to the end of May, each icense to be restricted to four heads of -ight points or over.
