AVONDALE JOCKEY CLUB. BISOX CAPTURES CUP. SUPREMACY TAKES STAKES. OPEN SPRINT TO HOARIRI. Atrocious weather prevailed on Saturday for the opening of the spring meeting of the Avondale Jockey Club. During the morning it was showery, while there was a strong north-west wind blowing. This eventually gave place to continuous rain which fell till after the seventh race. The conditions were reminiscent of those that prevailed years ago when the jockeys went on strike. There was a moderate attendance, but the totalisator figures showed a very large falling off compared with last year when the spring meeting was held at Ellerslie, the sum of £26,919 10/ going through the machine compared with £54,759 10/ for the first day last season, a decrease of £27,840. Despite the rain the course was in good order, as the times for the events will show. The Cup was run in much faster time than the event was decided in last year. Bisox, the winner, was always handy, and scored decisively at the finish. The Flying Handicap went to Hoariri, who won in easy fashion. Supremacy, a gelding by Chief Ruler, traind at Te Awaniutu, annexed the Avondale Stakes in hollow fashion.
Favourite Lifts the Stakes. Ten juveniles failed to parade for the Avondale Stakes, which left a similar number to go to the post ior the first two-ycar-old classic of the Reason. The favourite selection was Supremacy ( £600), Hunting Day ( £503) and First Money (£485). The public were not far astray in their summing up. Royal •Menu, Golden Measure, Love Call and Supremacy were first to begin, but as they crossed the top Supremacy had taken charge from First Money, Love Call, Hunting Day and Flying Prince. The order was the same into the straight, where Supremacy cleared right away from the field and won very easily by six lengths from Hunting Day, who finished on in second place to beat Imperial Guard by a neck. Flying Prince, Royal Menu, Cyman, First Money, Love Call and Golden Measure followed in the above order. The Big Sprint. Awarere, Paganelli, King Lu, White Fang, Lysander, Tea Time, Macroom, Oration, Prince Otto and Te Atiawa were the withdrawals from the Flying Stakes, the big sprint event of the day. Hoariri ( £696), Silvermine ( £557) and The Fox (£548) were best backed. When the field settled down Kingfield, Benzora and Nancy Lee were in the van and they led across the top, where Silvermine put in a fast run and hit the front, only to be displaced by Hoariri, who led into the straight and went on to win by three lengths from Silvermine, with Kingfield two and a-half lengths away. The next to finish were Benzora, The Fox, Tinokoa, Prodice, Lady’s Boy and Royal Doulton. An Outsider Scores. Restaurant was the only scratching in the Swanson Handicap, leaving a field of twelve runners to contest the mile hack race. The pool was a good one, with most support for Golden Wedding, who carried £671, the next fancied being Killute £326, and Nassock £316. The winner, Storm Fiend, carried £ll7 only. Golden Wedding was troublesome at the post, and did not get away too well. Star Comet, War Officer, Luminary, Storm Fiend, and Nassock was the order when the field got fairly into their stride, but along the back Luminary was showing the way to Storm Fiend, Illingar, Killute, War Officer, and Golden Wedding. Crossing the top Killute had run up second to Luminary, with Storm Fiend next. Storm Fiend then put in a run, and settling Luminary in the run home, he won by two- and a-half lengths from War Officer, who finished fast and got second money. Golden Wedding, Killute, Nassock, The Lover, and Illingar followed, with Kerry Dance last, The Concluding Event.
The programme concluded with the Henderson Handicap, for which Miss New Zealand ( £887). High Pitch ( £832), and Te Koroke (£770) were best backed. Auriculus, High Pitch, and Master Doon were first to show out from Uralla and Thursby. Crossing the top High Pitch was in charge from Master Doon, Auriculus, Mint Leaf and Modest Boy. High Pitch was first to turn for home from Master liopn, Thursby, Modest Boy and Auriculus. High Pitch went on to win by a length from Modest Boy, who beat Te Koroke by a neck. Master Doon, Auriculus, Mint Leaf and Golden Krist were next. Results:—
