AERO CLUB DANCE.
Hearty cheers and much hand-clapping greeted Squadron-Leader Kingsford Smith, Flight-Lieutenant C. T. P. Ulm, Mr. H. A. Litchfield and Mr. T. H. McWilliam as they entered the ballroom in the Town Hall on Saturday evening, when the Aero Club held a most successful ball in their honour. In spite of the inclement weather a large number of dancers .were present to pay tribute to the aviators, and the enjoyable time spent by everybody was evidenced by the atmosphere of festivity which prevailed. On arrival the guests were received in the Mayoress’ room by members of the committee and later entered the ballroom Mrs. Murdoch, sister of Mr. McWilliam, wis also present in the official party and was presented with a beautiful bouquet. With masses of greenery, the solemn lines of the Town Hall were transformed into a magnificent bower. Hanging baskets of fern hung from the ceiling and trails of lycopodium were looped from pillar to pillar and around the balconies. In each corner large clumps of bamboo and nikau palms formed attractive lounges where comfortable chairs were placed for the dancers’ use. Most beautiful of all was the stage. It was banked with masses of ferns, bamboo and pot plants, green lights being inset in the midst and throwing trails of lights that seemed to lead into the far distance. Large bowls of Iceland poppies formed a charming splash of colour amidst the greenery. In the supper room gaily-coloured flags were draped around the walls and on the tables large bowls of anemones, Iceland poppies, and daffodils were charmingly arranged. Over the guests of honour, a miniature model aeroplane with propeller in action, was hung; the whole scheme presented a most animated scene. During supper, Mr. Merritt thanked the ladies of the Victoria League and Navy League for their help in making the function a success. The time had been very short and their wonderful work was much appreciated. The ball committee included:—Miss Mowbray, chairman, Lady Sinclair-Lockhart, Lady Nolan, Mesdames J. Alexander, W. R.
