OLD FARMER DROWNED.

William Dean, aged 73, an old reri* dent of the Waihi district, was crossing ’ the Ohinemuri Rix er on the main road ' yesterday morning when he was thrown from his horse and drowned. No one witnessed the accident, bu» ’ Mr. Dean was seen leading his horse 1 across the road towards the crossing over the riverbed which leads to Mr. «• Say’s farm. Some time later a young man named Scott noticed Mr. Deans horse returning with the saddle hanging loose. It is believed the animal stumbled ’ when crossing, and threw its rider into 1 the river, which was partly in flood- : After dragging the river for an hour 5 the police discovered Mr. Dean’s body ; about 20 yards below the crossing, ® ■ about eight feet of water. _ • ?
