WORK OF Y.M.C.A. OBSERVATIONS IN AUSTRALIA AMERICAN VISITOR’S VIEWS. “regressing on splendid lines, the work of the Young Men’s Christian Association is playing a big part in the national life of the Commonwealth,” said Mr. J. W. Cook, general secretary of the Y.M.C.A. in America, who arrived by the Aorangi this morning from Sydney.
Mr. Cook said he considered that the association’s work in Australia was of an exceptionally high standard. The programme groups amongst the boys were very strong, and at Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane effective work was being carried out with the churches and organisations that had community merit. At Sydney a branch was being established at Manly, and a new site had been secured for the main building. At Melbourne various branches throughout the city and suburbs were being
formed. A fine feature was the high type of citizen as taking an interest in the work. Mr. Cook said that the tendency in America w*as to develop purpose membership on thel ines that members should have some purpose of service when they join the organisation. Mr. Cook, who passed through Auckland on his way to Australia, is looking forward to a brief tour of {few Zealand, in which he will be in the closest touch with the Dominion’s Y.M.C.A. activities.
