SAWMILL DESTROYED.
SPECTACULAR BLAZE. BRIGADE SAVES SAWN TIMBER HEAVY LOSS TO OWNER. ' (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) DARGAVILLE, this day. Mr. H. S. Anderson’s sawmill, one of the only two remaining mills in the district, was destroyed by a fire which broke out about noon on Sunday. A planing mill adjoining the main mill was saved after a strenuous fight by the brigade. Railway buldings nearby, and large stacks of valuable timber in the mill yards also were saved.
The fire was one of the largest and most spectacular seen in the town for some years, and, watched by a large crowd of people, it burned for some hoin s. A very high wind made the firemen’s work particularly difficult, but had it not been for their efforts the damage would have been much greater and the loss heavier. The fire came at a very unfortunate ime, as the timber trade during recent months has shown an improvement, and the sawmill machinery had recently undergone a thorough overhaul, and the nmnin™\ haV ® commenc «l full time limning to-day. . , Th ® .. mi ” destroyed was one of the oldest in the district, and kept about 20 hands constantly employed.
