Backers Start Badly

An Outsider Scores In Opening Event. The programme opened with the Grey Lynn Hurdles, for which Fane was the only withdrawal. Kawini £367, the Uralla-Royalform bracket £220, and Glenotus £lBO, were best backed, most of the others being at a long price. At the start Royalform, Hangawera, Polyphemus, Llewellyn, Karamu, Uralla, Glenotus, Rahepoto and Kawini was the order. At the second fence Hangawera and Rahepoto fell and Uralla came down at the hurdle in the straight. Llewellyn led out of the straight from Karamu, Royalform and Glenotus, with Kawini some distance back. The order was the same along the back, and crossing the top Llewellyn was leading Karamu, Glenotus, Royalform and Kawini. Llewellyn was first into the straight with Karamu, Glenotus, Royalform and Kawini all bunched. Royalform took charge at this stage but fell at the last fence, leaving Llewellyn to go on and win by half a length from Kawini, Glenotus being three lengths away in third place. Karamu was fourth and Polyphemus next.

An Easy Victory. All started in the Nursery Handicap, and when the machine closed the three best supported were Imperial Guard (£1017), Flying Prince (£653), and Eaglet (£523). Flying Prince, who had the inside position, was first to begin, attended by Golden Measure, Imperial Guard, Eaglet, Snow Plane, and Bennie. After they had gone a furlong, Fifing Prince was leading Imperial Guard, with Eaglet and Golden Measure together, and Snow Plane and Bennie next. Imperial Guard and Flying Prince turned for home on terms, but the latter stayed on in good style, and got the verdict by three lengths from Imperial Guard, with Eaglet, who finished fast, three-quarters of a length away. Bennie and Snow Plane were next.

A Big Field. Bombarder, Winnington, Amos and Kawainga were the defections from the Mount Albert Handicap, leaving nineteen riinners to contest the event. Most money was invested on Lady Quex (£836), Luminary (£736 10/) and Blue Spear (£371 10/). Storm Fiend was the early leader from Blue Spear and Diamond Queen, but when a furlong had been covered. Leitrim had charge from Master Lu, Blue Spear, Storm Fiend, Diamond Queen and Luminary. When they turned into the straight‘the order was Leitrim, Abbey Queen, Diamond Queen, Maori Boy (who ran out wide), Storm Fiend and Sulla. In a great finish. Storm Fiend, on the inside, and Maori Boy, who finished under the judge’s box. ran a dead heat, with Abbey Queen a neck away, in third place. Nurjahan was fourth, and then followed Air King, Good Boy. Hlingar, Letrim and Valda. After the race the stewards held au inquiry, as the result of which Turvey. rider of Maori Boy, was suspended for a month. Te Kara Back to Form. Nukumai, Te Koroke, and Desert Glow failed to parade for the Plumpton Handicap, the principal event on the programme. It was a good betting race, with most support for Bisox (£1011), Royal Mine ( £843), and King Lu ( £662). Papatu and Royal Mint were racing together in front of High Pitch, Bisix, King Lu, White Fang, Te Kara, and Mint Leaf when the field had settled down, but High Pitch had taken the lead along the back from Papatu, Royal Mint. Bisox, White Fang, King Lu, Te Kara, and Mint Leaf, with Auriculus last. Crossing the top High Pitch and Papatu were showing the way to Bisox, Royal Mint, and Te Kara. Papatu, High Pitch, and Bisox were in line as they turned into the straight, with Te Kara and Mint Leaf following. About 100 yards from th epost Te Kara came away to win by two lengths from Mint Leaf, who beat Bisox by a length.
