FLOODS IN TE KUITI.
GALE AND HEAVY RAIN. RIVERS RISING QUICKLY. BOROUGH ROAD A FOOT DEEP. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) TE KUITI, this day. A severe electric storm, accompanied by a heavy north-westerly gale and followed by heavy rain, broke over the town and district at eight o’clock last night and continued for eight hours. The downpour of rain caused a rapid rise in the waterways. The Mangaokewa River, running through the town, rose ten feet during last night. The racecourse and the main highway were one foot under water to-day and pedestrians and school children had to be ferried over part of Borough Road in a cart.
No serious damage has so far been reported. A minor slip on the railway at Poro-o-taroa was cleared by surfacemen.
It is reported from inland that trees were blown down across the PomarangiRawhia Road.
The rain had ceased at 11 o’clock, but the river whs still rising and the gale had not abated.
