DAMAGE ON EAST COAST

GISBORNE, this day.
A severe north-west gale raged during last night, interrupting telegraphic communication. Damage is reported at Whatututu where the gale was of unparalleled severity. The verandah of a hotel was lifted bodily, carried over a building, and deposited in the back yard. Nearly every chimney in the hotel and several other buildings were demolished. The roofs of several houses were blown off and iron scattered all over the country side. • A number of small outbuildings were razed to the ground, and tanks and trees were blown down. At Gregory's store, which is a. post office, half the roof was carried across the road. At Ruatorea the balcony of the hotel was blown away, windows smashed, and power lines brought down.
