UNITED STATES TRADE.

The American Trade Commissioner (Mr. Julian B. Foster) has received the following cable message from the United States Department of Commerce regarding business conditions in the United States during August:— "Business and industry generally has had an upward trend in August. Steel mills throughout the country are operating at 83 per cent of their maximum capacity The automobile industry continues at a high rate of activity. Railway 'earnings are much higher. Construction contracts decrease slightly. Record volume Stock Exchange transactions. Brokers' loans renew upward •wing. Money rates higher.'
