SPRING RACING.

OPENING OF AUCKLAND

SEASON.

THE AVONDALE MEETING.

GOOD FIELDS ENGAGED.

Tiri PROGRAMME REVIEWED.

Tl'o spring meeting o£ the Avondale Juckcy (Jlub, which will open at Avondale tomorrow, will inaugurate the new Tfteing season in the Auckland province. Splendid lie Ids are engaged (in fact, the Maiden Piute lias had td be divided) mul the racing should be full of interest from start to finish. The new course, •with the fi no weather experienced recently, should be in excellent order, and all that remain* i« for the sun to sliirie to make the fixture a most successful one. A Division. Proceedings will commence with the [Maiden Plate, which will be run in two divisions, but tlic totalisutor will only be open once on tlie event. Moat of those engaged have little to commend them. Jn tlio first division Komak was third to Bisox and Linioea in a niile event at the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt meeting twelve months ago, but lias not been in the money since. Jolie Money showed some fo as a two-year-old last season, flnng second to Lucy Rose in the •eka Handicap, eix furlongs, at the ikato autumn meeting. Mauriaena >as a promising two-year-old and raced *t Marton and Wanganui recently. She •bowed up for a while in tho Maiden fiaco at tho latter fixture, but got a Jtnock in the running. She may do better to-morrow. Of the Others, Eager (lose, who finished second in the Tu Jtumi Handicap, one mile, to Beau Cavalier may be the best. The <a vourites may be EAGER ROSE MAURIAENA., In the second division Arikitoa was third to Miss New Zealand and Oscar in fclu> Maiden Handicap, six furlongs, at 'the Waikato autumn meeting. Diamond Queen has shown a lot of pace in her faces, while Parfait Amour finished hard in two seven-furlong events at the last Avondale fixture and occupied a •imilar position to Partial Eclipse and Foreign Fancy in a division of the Maiden Stakes, six furlongs at the Waikato autumn meeting. Blue Spear was second to Bonibarder in another division of the same event. Maori Boy, who was third in the Trial Stakes at Whaiigarci to British King and Solanio, may bo the best of the others.- Perhaps most' money will go <511 PARFAIT AMOUR BLUE SPEAR. The Jumpers. The Kingsland Hurdh; Race will next claim attention. Quineoma is top weight with 10.10. He" won at Trentham in July, but failed at the Grand National meeting. However, he may be improved with tho experience. Polyphemus won well at Wanganui and should be hard "to dispose of. Potoanui was third in tho Brighton Hurdle Race, and at the recent To Kuiti meeting dead-heated with Kauri Park Li the King Country Hurdle Race. He looks in gpod condition •at present. Llewellyn has also beei working well at Ellerslie, and there is no doubt about his ability over hurdles Fair Abbey has not started since th( last Pakuranga Hunt meeting, when In won tho Hunters' Hurdles in good style Pckatuhi was third to Famdoir ami Buhadur in the Pio Pio Hurdles at the Te Kuiti meeting. Marble Mount shaped well in his work at Ellerslie anc is in good condition. He has) been show ang a lot of pace on the flat, and woulc only need to jump properly to have t chance. Adjuster and Scot Free ma\ .appeal most of the others engaged. Whei ithe machine closeß most money may b, <«n POTOANUI POLYPHEMUS LLEWELLYN. ' The Members' Handicap. Fifteen remain in the Members' Handi eap, with Oration at the head of th< list. This horse has raced well tlm season, and he put up a good perform ®nce in finishing second to Helotis ii tho Flying Handicap at Wanganui lasi week. On that showing lie will have t< be reckoned with. Wliaka King provei himself a good sprinter last season, am would only need to be at liis* best t< have a show. Billikins won a sb furlong event at Trentham last seasoi and was placed in liis last three ontings -—second to The Raider at Feilding second to Miss New Zealand in a divisior of the Jervois Handicap at Ellerslie, anc second to The Fox in the Visitors Handicap at the same meeting. Mastel Doou has not shown any form for som< time past. Gold Money was a verj speedy two-year-old last season, win ning three events and being placed another occasion out of seven stafts. Sh» has been going along well in her wort at. Ellerslie and should give a goo< account of herself. Ballymoy 11. is verj speedy, anil looks to be in good condi tion. Lomint has been working a goot deal better recently, and should raci more prominently than she did at tin Great Northern meeting. Subdivisioi won a live furlong event last season but he has*not raced since the autumn Liaison won a seven-furlong event ai Tukapuna Inst season, and captured £ similar event at the Franklin fixture Tea Lady scored at the rccent Gisborn* meeting, and has a lot of pace. Lucj Roso was a good two-year-old las: season, and her third .at the recent Wan rranui meeting to Singleton and Greei Acre showed that she was nearing hei best. Winnington showed winning ability up to five, furlongs last season, while o 1 lioso lower down Serang may be tht lost. The chief fancies may be ORATION LUCY ROSE GOLD MONEY The Big Event. A good field is engaged in the Avon 4alo Cup, but all the same there are no toany with credentials up to • mile ant

a-half. Star Stranger, who is looking well, proved himself'a great stayer under big weights last season, and on his last appearance at the Avondale autumn meeting carried 10-1 into second place over a mile and a-quarter. Mask is in receipt of 81b from him, and last season was second in the Mitchelson Cup, one mile and a-half, carrying 8.8, and deadheated with Star Stranger in the King Edward Handicap, one mile and a-quarter, on the second day. Later in the season Mask won the Autumn Handicap at Ellerslie, one mile and a-half, with 9.4 The Hawk can hardly be ready td run a mile and a-half. Te Kara won the event last season with 8.12, but had had a good deal of racing just previously. He is now in with SIS. Nukuniai 'looks very lit, and even though ho has been racing over hurdles recently he showed, when he ran second in . the Why te Memorial Handicap and

the Parliamentary Handicap "at the last Wellington meeting, what a good horse on the flat he still is. At Wanganui'on Saturday he was finishing very fast in third place ia the Higgie Handicap, one mile and a-quarter, and if it had been a little further he would have been much more troublesome. Nukumai looks very fit, and will run a great race. King. Lu has had some racing through the winter besides the early spring, and he will be very fit. He was second to Rapier in the Clifford Plate, one mile and a-half, at Ellerslie at Christmas time. Both had 94, and King Lu was beaten by two lengths in 2.35. Valkon showed that he was in form by finishing third and fourth respectively hi his engagements at VVanganui last week. Paitonu lias performed well up to a mile and a-quarter, j is has Bisox. Desert Glow would only! ieed to be at his best to have ( a good hancd with 7M, while of those lower lown Sir Archie and Rbyal Mint may nave most friends. The bulk of the investments may go on KINO LU STAR STRANGER JsUKUMAI. The Two-Year-Old Classic. The Avondale Stakes is the first two-year-old classic of the season, and of course there are a number engaged that iave not yet sported silk. Alloy failed to get into the money in the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui on Saturday. First Money won a division of the Two-year-jld Parade at the same fixture, but was not started in the Debutante Stakes, tmperial Guard Was third -in a division }f fffe Two-year-old Parade at Wanganui, Von by Francolin. Hunting Day tvas second in a similar parade at Mar:on and fifth in his effort over a couple >f furlongs at Wrfngamii. Francolin and ?lever, it is stated will not start. Alloy md Supremacy n»ay be the best of the jtliers. Perhaps the public may select FIRST MONEY HUNTING DAY IMPERIAL GUARD. The Sprinters.

The Flying Stakes includes BOme good sprinters. Awarere is at the head of the handicap and his form last season was of the best. He wou the Railway Handicap among other events, and on his last appearance annexed the Railway Handicap, six furlongs, carrying t>.o at the Avondale autumn meeting. He ran the distance in 1.13 3-5. Pagunelli has any amount of pace and If light phould run well. Benzora was also a good sprinter last season, and he should be improved by his racing at Wanganui. Kiugfield lias not raced for some time, but when at his best is hard to dispose of. King Lu is engaged in the Cup and that looks likely to be his mission. Nancy Lee is a great sprinter and has only to produce her form of last season to be in the money. White Fang looks -well, while Silverruijie won nicely at Wanganui and should be even harder to dispose of to-morrow. Lysander is very big, while Macrooin was a useful sprinter last season. Of the others Flying Juliet, Royal Doulton, The Fox, Prodice, Hoariri, who has been galloping well on the tracks at Ellerslie, and Lady's Boy, may have most friends. The final figures may show a preference for

SILVERMINE , AWARERE BENZORA. The Swanson Handicap. Thirteen are carded for the Swanson Handicap. Star Comet won up to a mile and a-quarter last season, while lllingar was a useful performer in the north, scoring up to a mile. Storm Fiend won the Hangatiki Handicap, seven furlongs, at the Te Kuiti meeting at Ellerslie in July, which was his last start, while War Officer was useful up to a mile and has been going along all right in his work. Golden Wedding placed oyer nine furlongs at Takapuna last season and her track form recently has been most promising. Luminary won the Dominion Handicap, seven furlongs, at the last Avondale meeting, while Kerry Dance won the Maiden Plate, seven furlongs, at the same fixture. Killute, The Lover and Nassock may be most in demand of those lower down. Perhaps the best backed will be GOLDEN WEDDING KERRY DANCE NASSOCK.
