SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
A delightful ball took place at Mamaku, when Lodge Awhina, 1.0.0. F., held their annual dance in Purcell's Hall on Friday evening last. The hall was daintily decorated in a variety of colours, giving a beautiful rainbow effect. The stage was prettily arranged with ferns and arum lilies, which served as a screen for the K. Boys' orchestra, which rendered excellent music. The grand march was a pretty spectacle, in which 100 couples took part, headed by the officeth of the various lodges in regalia. Those not dancing surveyed tlie gay scene from the dress circlq. A feature of the'evening was the "Horahora Glide," an innovation which proved a, great success. The supper was a credit to the caterer, Mrs. Wheatley, and her staff of energetic assistants, and the committee worked hard to make the ball such a success.
The Ways and Means Committee of the Girls' Sports Ground Fund held a meeting on Tuesday, when final plana were made for the street collection and button selling on Friday night and Saturday morning. Mrs. A. 13. Campbell, Mayoress, is chairman of. the committee,* and in moat enthusiastic in helping all efforts to secure funds for the taking over of the Remuera Recreation Grounds as a girls' sports ground. Over 300 girls will be asking the citizens of Auckland to "buy a button," and it in expected that everyone will be interested in helping to provide much needed playing fields for our 'fcity girls. There be a games display on the Civic Square at half-past seven, and the Ponsonby Boys' Band have kindly offered to assist in the effort. We will see girls in a now role on Friday night, and it will be refreshing to see them determined to get their sports ground. «°* ♦ #
The Dunedin Club held a delightful social evening and dance 011 Wednesday, when the rooms were tastefully decorated and the drawing-room arranged with spring flowers. Mrs. Kate Raymond acted as hostess, and received the guests in a gold lace over blue lame. Mrs. Kiigeno Smith, Mrs. Hart, and '"Miss Darling were the winners of the bridge competitions. Last Tuesday evening over forty guests were entertained by Mr. and Mrs. R. Burfc of St. George.'s Bay Road, Parnell. Miss Burk received in a smart model frock of black satin, enchanced with black beads. The evening was given np entirely to singing.. The Otahuhu Holy Trinity facial Club held a fancy dress evening in the Public Hall on Tuesday night, when there were about 300 present. The room was beautifully decorated with coloured streamers and a
large bell in the centre. In addition to dancing, progressive 500 was indulged in, tlie winners being: —Gentlemen: first prize, Mr. Muller; consolation, Mr. Haslip. Ladies: first prize, Mrs. Speed; consolation, Mrs. Woods. The judges for the costumes were: Mrs. Dr. Jameson (Papat„Jtoe), Mrs. Dr. Currie and Mrs. Howard, of Otahuhu 1 . For the best fancy cc L ume, Miss B. Walker secured first prize as a butterfly, while Mr. H. J. Hall got first prize as representing a Spaniard. Special prizes were awarded to Messrs. S. Douglas and T. Faithfull, representing "Bing Boys." Most original costume: Ladies, Miss T. E. Kitto, House To Let. Gentlemen: Mr. T. W. Day. Dignity and Impudence. The Rev. C. W. B. Seton presented the prizes.
