TOWN BOARD SEATS.
SOME SURPRISES. MANUREWA CHAIRMAN DEFEATED. GLEN EDEN "TICKET" ELECTED. Lively interest was taken in some districts in the biennial election of members of town boards which was held yesterday. There are some notable changes in the personnel of the boards. In the Glen Eden district, where the meeting# of the Town Board have been so spectacular during the term of office of the late board, great interest was taken in the election. It was late when the results were announced, the count not being completed until after II p,m. A large number of electors awaited the declaration of the poll. The announcement of the result was received with cheers, and the newly-elected commissioners adjourned to the local hall, where a dance was being held. Mr. W. H. Shepherd, chairman of the old board, who was among those returned, said he was glad the "ticket" had met with the approval of the electors. He considered the men returned would do good work for the district, a statement which was supported by the newly-elected members, and endorsed by those present in the hall. The "ticket" did not include the disturbing elements in the late board. The "Citizens'" ticket was returned en bloc at Papatoetoe. Two tickets had been nominated, the other being that of the Welfare League, and there was one independent candidate. The elected candidates included two sitting members, Messrs. Nicholson and Sorenson. The Welfare League had as a main plank in its platform the system of rating on unimproved values, which was approved at a poll taken last year. The result of the poll is regarded as a reversal of opinion in the district on this question. The poll was a heavy one, and the number of votes recorded was almost double that at the election of 1926. It was almost midnight before the official count was completed. The result was announced to a long expectant crowd. At Manurewa, where there were ten nominations for the seven seats, of the three defeated candidates two have served several periods on the board. The sitting chairman, Mr. A. C. A. Sexton, who was defeated, was elected in 1922, and has filled the position of chairman continuously for three terms. Mr. C. H. Lupton, a sitting member, who also was rejected by the electors, has served the district over a long period, but not continuously. At one time he was chairman.
