LOANS FOR BATHS. CITY RATEPAYERS' DECISION. STRONG OPPOSITION SHOWN. Strong opposition was shown by city ratepayers yesterday to a proposal to borrow £22,500 for baths at Point Chevalier, and £7500 for filtration and sterilising plants at the Parnell and Shelly Beach Baths, also the extension of the intake pipe at the Tepid Baths. At none of the 34 booths was a favourable majority given in connection with the Point Chevalier proposal, the official figures being: — For the proposal 979 Against 3758 Informal 251 At twelve of the 34 booths a vote in favour of the proposed improvements to the waterfront baths was registered. The official figures were:— For the proposal 2306 Against 2527 Informal 153 Only 4968 votes were recorded out of a roll total of 26,389, a fact which is attributed to some extent to the loan poll clashing with the visit of the Tasman flyers. At some of the booths the Point Chevalier Baths proposal met with a ten to one adverse majority. At the Town Hall the voting was 151 in favour of the baths, and 536 against. At the Leys Institute the adverse vote was 297 to 59. The proposed filtration loan met with support at the following booths:—Town Hall, Heine Bay, Mission Hall, St. Columba, Epsom Library, St. Mark's, , Remuera Library, Remuera Baptist Church, St. Stephen's, Parnell Methodist Church, Victoria Park, Kohimarama and Ste. Heller's. The majorities were in most cases very small.
