"SHE'S A GIRL"
ESCAPES IN MAN'S CLOTHING.
ARRESTED IN LYTTELTON.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
CHRISTCHURCH, this day.
"She's a girl all right, sir, though she looks like a boy," said Sub-Inspector Fitzpatrick to Mr. Mosley, S.M., when Maria Marks was charged with being an idle and disorderly person, having insufficient lawful visible means of support. Accused, with close-cut hair, and wearing a man's coat, shirt and trousers, stepped into the dock. The sub-inspector stated that the girl escaped from the Burwood Home on August 26, and since then she had been in Lyttelton, leading a loose and immoral life. There was provision for the transfer of such an inmate to the Borstal Institution, and the matron of the Burwood Home had already taken steps io that direction. Accused was remanded in custody till September 27.
