LEAGUE FOOTBALL.
PROPOSED WHANGAREI MATCH
NEXT SATURDAY FOR CHARITY.
SCHOOL REPS. TO TRAVEL.
At the meeting of the Auckland Rugby League last evening, Mr. George Rhodes presiding, a letter was received from the South Auckland League asking that an Auckland representative team be sent to play there, as such a match would create considerable interest in the district. It was suggested that the game be held at Huntly on the 29th inst, on October 6, or later. It was decided that owing to the lateness of the season the League thought it inadvisable to tour this season. Nominations for the Labour Day Cup competition between the Benior teams of the city and North and South Auckland representative teams are to close on Wednesday next. The secretary of the New Zealand Council advised that it had contributed £10 towards the expenses of the Ponsonby club to Hikurangi, but the matter of a settled policy regarding assisting clubs waa being considered. A telegram from the Northland League, soliciting a game against Auckland, to be played at Kensington Park, Whangarei, was referred to the League. It was resolved to send a team to Whangarei, subject to suitable financial arrangements being made with the New Zealand Council. A report was made that Hikurangi juniors were to play against a lower grade club team as a curtain-raiser to the final of the Roope Rooster on Saturday week. The same day the Veterans' match would take place between teams chosen by Messrs. Opai, Asher and C.
McClymont. The game, to '<»«» for 45 minutes, was expected to create much interest. It was announced that the special meeting to discuss the new system of senior grade teams would be considered to-morrow evening. The prospect of a club reverting to League and two more districts coming into the g&me were mentioned. After some discussion, Saturdav next was fixed as Charity Day, when all patrons, except players engaged in matches, will have to pay for admission to Carlaw Park. | It was decided to place on record the League's appreciation of the good work of the Glee Club in entertaining visiting teams during the season. The League also thanked motorists who lent cars on Sunday for the Otago team and Chief Mapi Wilson for hospitality at Mangere Pa. The visit of a Primary Schools' representative team to South Auckland, on a date to be arranged, was approved. SATURDAY'S ENGAGEMENTS. Following are the fixtures for Saturday next: — ROOPE ROOSTER. Only a couple of hundred spectators saw the Otago touring team badly beaten by South Auckland to the tune of 36 points to 12 at Hamilton to-day. The South Auckland backs made the most of every opportunity. Otago had a first-class hooker in Townsend. who beat his opponent in the scrum nine times out of ten, but his supports were weak, and many openings were lost. South Auckland kicked off against the wind and the visitors quickly attacked. However Everest relieved and Williams followed up the kick. He secured the ball and passed to Everest, who scored. The kick failed. Offside play by the home team enabled O'Connor to kick a goal. Otago attacked and Clydesdale scored an unconverted try. The score was equalised by a penalty goal kicked by Hall. The South Auckland backs initiated a passing movement, which culminated in Abbott racing down a third of the field and scoring. Hall added the major points. Everest broke away and passed to Raynor, who scored. Hall converted, making the scores: South Auckland, 15; Otago, 5. Then
Clydesdale scored and converted. The Booth Auckland forwards took a hand, and a passing bout between Timms and Jones ended in Timms scoring. Hall converted. Clydesdale kicked a penalty goal for Ctago. and at half-time the scores were: South Auckland, 20: Otago, 12. In the second half the wind became stronger and militated against good play. After a succession of South Auckland attacks Raynor dribbled through and fcorrt. Shortly afterwards liajrnor again scaredHall was successful with the kick. South Auckland continued to hold the advantage. Tries were scored by Jones i'.nd Everest. Ilall converted one. and the cai.:e ended : South Auckland. M 6 ; Otago, 12.
