SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

An impromptu dance to wind up the hunting season was given by Mr. and Mrs. Wills McLaughlin, at their residence, Puhunui, for the members of the Pakuranga Hunt and their friends. The rooms looked charming with decorations rf massed freesiaa, primroses and blue hyacinths. The hostess, Mrs. Wills McLaughlin, was in red check taffeta; Mrs. Audrev Peacock, blue flowered taffeta; M iss Pabst, black crepe de chine; Miss Theo Pabst, red ring velvet; Miss Betty Crowther, Cambridge cream georgette; M iss Somerset Thomas, pink, with amber shawl; Lady Jean Mcintosh, white crepe de chine, embroidered with sequins; Mrs. Maekey Grant, pink with black shawl. Others present were: Mesdames. F. A. Price, W. B. Lloyd, Owen Self, Dart, Gordon Rutherford, P. H. Smith, and Misses Constance Martin, Ethere Lloyd and Evelyn Martin.

Mrs. H. Scales, with the object of aiding the funds for the unemployed, presented the Milford Amateur Operatic Society in the three-act comedy "The Pirate's Daughter," by Keith CrosbyBrowne, to a large and appreciative audience in the Parish Hall at Devonport on Wednesday evening. All the difficulties of producing on a strange stage were successfully overcome by the stage manager, Mr. W. Armitage, the audience showing its delight by prolonged applause. The pretty dressing, effective Btaging, good solo work and splendid choruses were remarked on, and Miss E. Conway's musical monologue was specially mentioned as a fine bit of wor.K. The Mayoress, Mrs. E. Aldridge, was amongsit the audience. Dancing was carried on till midnight after the show, the Kit Kat Band having offere dits services free.

A success ful party was held on \ Tuesday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Stacey Adeane, Heme Bay. • Mrs. Adeane, who received the guests, j ■wore a model frock of figured crepe de ' chine. The guest of the evening, Miss t Mabel McCarthy, wore a frock of Havana lace and hand-embroidered • ■hawl. Among the ladies were: Misses -j E. Adeane, wearing black ring velvet ■with silver; K. Adeane, russet -taffeta and shawl; Tat Adeane, black chiffon velvet with emerald; AL Clarke, lemon satin with georgette; B. Davidson, pink and mauve taffeta; G. Burgess.'bois de rose, chiffon velvet and crepe de chine; G. Mays, champagne georgette; R. Turner, green taffota with silver trimming; L. Kennedy, lacquer red georgette with silver trimming; I. Thomas, pale pink taffeta; A. French, scarlet ring velvet; Mrs. T. Green, salmon pink crepe de chine. 11 '
