"TINNED MUSIC."
"Talky Soundy" Films Cause Stir. DEATH KNELL OF ORCHESTRAS? (Australian an&K.Z. Frees Association.) LONDON, September 18. What are known as "talky souitdy" films, which carry their own musical and vocal accompaniments, are likely to throw two-thirda of the cinema musicians in Britain out of work in the next two years. It is estimated that 50,000 musicians in America will shortly be out of work also, leading to the saving of at least £1,000,000 a year. The Musicians' Union in Britain, where more than 3000 orchestras have been brought into - existence by the cinemas, is endeavouring to obtain a guarantee .that at least a third of the musicians now in employment shall be retained by the industry to supplement; the "tinned music" or to act as deputies when the machinery is out of order.
