SLATER APPEAL.
—— i Scottish Office Refuses To Pay Costs. CON AN DO7LE "IN" FOB £300 ? (Australian and X.Z. Press Association.) LONDON", September 18. The Scottish Office has refused to pay tho costs of Osrar Slater's appeai against his sentence in connection with the murder of Miss Gilchrist, amounting to about £1500. The public subscriptions for Slater amounted to £700. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who guaranteed £1000, will have to find £300. He expresses the opinion that the Scottish Office should pay the entire costs, as its stupidity created the situation.
