MILK IS SECRETED BEFORE MILKING.
The old belief that most of the milk is secreted while the cow ia being milked has been disproved. Experiments conducted at the Government station *at Beltsville, Maryland (U.S.A.), . showed that practically -all the milk drawn from the udder at one milking had been secreted previously, and was stored up awaiting the milking process. Now come dairymen from the Illinois experiment station with evidence to show that there is more milk in the udder when milking starts than can be drawn from it in milking. In conducting this trial, three cows were milked regularly at 12-hour intervals for several days, then killed at the exact time the milking would start, the udder removed, and the milk drawn from it. Only about one-fourth the usual amount was obtained in this way, another fourth when the udder was cut up , , and the presence of the remainder determined by a chemical test for lactose, or milk sugar, which is found in no place in an animal's body except in the milk. -.-
