MIDNIGHT ADVENTURE.
It was midnight, and all wa« peaceful in the boarding-house. The moon's pale rays cast a ghostly gleam over all. Suddenly a door opened. "I must get that toothache mixture," whispered little Miss James, the elderly boarder, to herself. Click! Another door opened, and Hies James shrank back into the shadows. From it emerged two men, one of whom was carrying a poker in his hand. "If we get him, this time, we'll be able in peace." one aaid. : Miss James , mind immediately flashed to a story she had once read, in which a man was killed, that he might not betray his accomplices. On they went, and, possessed of sudden courage, she followed them. As they stopped at the end of the corridor sho paused expectantly in the shadow of a door. "Here he comes I think. Be quiet or be will be warned." Miss James was in a quandary. Shotld she call out and so warn the victim? If she did the men would escape. "Now," said ono man, and the stick frr**/ T ith U e htDin e rabidity on to of thTpeace UMUB P ectin g disturber After disposing of its body the men walked back to their room*. They did not see Mies James, and as they passed one said. "well, there will be Wmore scampering on the roof at night now Jim. "No, Loe," the other replied; "we can sleep in peace now." The next morning at breakfast, one of the men said to Miss James, "did you sleep well last night, Miss James? I hope Jim and I didn't disturb you. We caught that rat that has been annoving us all for such a long time." * "X-n-not at all," strmu-cred Miss James is confusion.
