NATIVE LAND FOR SETTLEMENT.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
HASTINGS, this day. Yesterday a large party, including the Mayor and Councillors of the Hastings Borough Council, Messrs. Dillon, M.P., CarncToss, M.L.C., and others, paid a visit to the Waimarama, to make themselves acquainted with the property concerning which the Native Commissioners are making certain recommendations. After reviewing the locality, the following resolution was passed: "That the Mayor be requested to call a public meeting at an early date, with a view to the Government securing the seashore frontage as a public watering place for the benefit of the people, and a further area for close settlement; and that an invitation be 'sent to H;he Prime Minister and the Minister lor 'Lands to visit Waimarama at an early date to inspect it." It was stated that the natives had expressed willingness to dispose of a further 6000 acres .by .public auction to "encourage . closer settlement, which scheme would be impracticable if the frontage :vere not reserved.
