The phenomenon of a dark steamer form a mountain top., not an active volcano, was mentioned in the course oi an address before the Gtago Institute. The steamer has every appearance of thick lava smoke blown by the wind, and is so like the real thing as to deceiveeven an expert. The explanation given was that the condition of the atmosphere ■was peculiarly effected by the snow on the mountain top, which, with certain refractional effects, made it appear to trail back and dense against the white background, of snow. It was thought that many had been deceived by this "imitation," and that many hills might ■have .been described as being in active eruption which in reality were stonecold;
