[VOLUNTEER SOCIAL. The No. 2 Company Garrison- Artillery Volunteers, winners of the volunteer Rugby football championship, held their annual smoke concert in the Drill Hall last night, when there -was a large attendance. Sergeant-major Jackson presented the championship cup and caps, while Gunner Staunton received a medal for. being the best back. A like honour was conferred on Bombadier Gross, who was voted the best forward. To commemorate the feat of his having kicked the first goal from the field, Gunner Dillon was presented'with a pair of boots. The customary toasts were honoured; and the evening was spent in an enjoyable manner, of which the musical items contributed by members of the company formed no small part. NORTHCOTE ATHENAEUM. * The fortnightly meeting of the Nbrthcote Athenaeum was held last evening in Tarry's Hall at Northcote. Mr A. Campbell presided, and there was a good attendance of members. The following were elected officers for the ensuing year: President, Mr H. W. Wilding; vicepresidents, Messrs H. H. Hunt, F. T. Jeffrey, A. E. H. Harrison, A. Campbell, E. M. C. Harrison, C. G. Hodgson, and G. Wilson; committee, Mesdames Cavaye, Chetwynd, Misses Carter, and E, Gifford; editor of the "Meteor," Mr A. E. H. Harrison; secretary, Mr A. W. Potter; treasurer, Mr A. Campbell. The rest of the evening was devoted to impromptu speeches, delivered by Messrs Jeffrey,-Wilding, Hunt, Carter, and Wilson.
