AUSTRALIAN TARIFF.
WELCOME TO PREFERENCE.
BIRMINGHAM'S COMPLAINT
LONDON, August 17.
The Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, in a memorial to Lord Elgin, sets out the injustice and hardship and enormous losses inflicted on British exporters by the Commonwealth tariff coming into operation without notice, and has requested Lord Elgin to ask the Commonwealth to postpone the operation of the tariff for three months.
The "Morning Post" welcomes the Australian tariff as likely to strengthen British trade in competition with foreign, as in the case of Canadian preference.
Mr. Lloyd-George, President of the Board of Trade, confesses it will be of enormous value.
Mr. Deakin, in a message to the British merchants through the " Times," says the Federal Government is determined to make preference effective, and regards the present arrangements as only the first great step.
