A SALVAGE DISASTER.

AT KAWATIRI WRECK. I TWrO ;JLTVES LOST. .; (Received 9.15 a.m.) HOBART, this day. A boat containing three men was attempting to get the mails from the wreck of the steamer Kawatiri when it capsized.

Oscar Dale, assistant lighthouse-keeper at Macquarie Heads, and another man named Ware were drowned, while Dale's brother was rescued.

Dale had shown conspicuous bravery at the time of the wreck by saving the lives of several passengers.

[The lighthouse and its inmates seem destined to play a dramatic part in the story of the wreck of the Kawatiri. The lighthouse-keeper was on the bridge of the tower when his wife cried out to him for help from the steamer's boat. Later on he saved her life.]
