A MAGISTRATE'S SPEECH.
In view of the sensational attack on Lord Ashtown, it is interesting to recall a message, dated London, June 14, in which reference was made to a speech delivered by Mr. P. Kelly, district magistrate at Nevinn, County Galway. In the course of his remarks, which were made the subject of Government inquiry, leading to his being relieved of office Mr. Kelly declared that if Lord Ashtown, the local landlord, who was under constant strict police protection, had lived at Killane or Loughrea, he would have been on a stretcher long ago, in the same way as John Blake (who was shot dead in 1883).
Mr. Kelly added that the men of Woodlawn lacked the courage and manliness "to treat Lord Ashtown as they should."
Lord Ash town (third in the barony of that name) is thirty-nine years of age, and succeeded his grandfather in 1888. He is the owner of 22,000 acres, mostly made up of Woodlawn property in County Galway, referred to above.
