GAMBLING IN LAND.

PROTEST AGAINST DUMMYISM.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

DUNEDIN, this day.

The Otago Trades and Labour Council passed the following resolution:—-'This Council wishes to pointedly direct the attention of the Government to the large amount of trafficking going on in connection with blocks of lands open for selection by Government. Gamblers who have no intention of going on the land are allowed to enter the ballot, which they do for no other purpose than selling out at increased value, which conclu" sively proves that the land is leased at too low a rental. The Council contend that only bona-fide selectors should be permitted to enter a ballot. The Government should immediately take effective steps to stop dummies from entering ballots; and in all cases a fair rental should be fixed."
