"LIGHTHOUSE FOR THE NORTH CAPE.
In reference to the recommendation in the annual report of the Marine Department that a lighthouse is desirable at either North. Cape or Cape Brett, it is understood (says the New Zealand "Tiroes") that preference is given to the first locality, as it is the turning point of vessels bound from the west to Auckland. It is estimated that the cost of snch a lighthouse -with. keepers' houses and all equipment of a light of the second order would amount to about £7500. THE COUNTESS OF RAXFURLY. The schooner Countess of Eanfurly Is expected to arrive at Auckland about the first week in September from the Cook Islands, and Niue. The Countess of Ranfurly will make another trip to the Islands •before passing out of the hands of the Government, wlo nave already called, for tenders for the purchase of the vessel. Cross arrived from Melanesia and Norfolk Island at 11 a.m. to-day, and berthed at the Queenstreet Wharf. a report of the passage appears in another column. The Union Company's new intercolonial steamer Marama is expected to leave London on the 21st September for New Zealand, via Capetown and Melbourne. The vessel is due at Dunedin early in November. The work of repairing the damaged stem tube of the Maheno and of overhauling the vessel while she is in dock (says the Caristchurch "Press") is bein? carried out by the Union Company's staff under the supervision i;f Mr Smart, superintending engineer. The work of drawing the middle stem tube is now going on, and is proving a somewhat slow and awkward task. Until this tube has been drawn and examined it is not possible to say how serious the damage is.
