LAND PURCHASE IN FIJI.

LONDON, July 17.

In the House of Lords, at Lord Stanmare's request, the Secretary of State for the Colonies (Earl of Elgin) consented to present to the House correspondence respecting the sale of land in the provinces of Kewa and Naitaisiri, Fiji.

Lord Stanmore expressed a fear that it would be possible under the recent ordinance for the authorities, by the acquisition of land for public purposes, to deprive the Fijians of the whole of their lands.

Lord Elgin replied that the Governor of Fiji (Sir Everard im Thurn) was still bound to protect the interests of the natives, who -.vere unable, owing to the declining population, to cultivate all the land available. It was the duty of tb* Government to take all steps to promote the settlement of the islands and to increase the population.

In conclusion, the Earl of Elgin expressed a belief that the correspondence would satisfy Lord Stanmore.
